The good news, however, is that these ‘royal’ restorations are nothing to be afraid of. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect during treatment, and why you shouldn’t hesitate to give yourself a smile that’s fit for a king!

What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are deluxe fillings that can repair a variety of types of tooth damage, including cracks, extensive decay, or that have already had so many dental fillings that the integrity of the tooth would be compromised by adding another. However, unlike regular fillings, crowns fit over the reshaped tooth like a cap or hat. Best of all, many can be customized to match the color of your healthy teeth, so they blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile and nobody will ever need to know they’re a restoration!

What Happens During a Dental Crown Treatment?

Many patients are hesitant to commit to dental crown treatment because they’re afraid the procedure might hurt. The good news is that before beginning any work on your tooth, your dentist will numb your mouth to ensure you are comfortable. If you are very anxious or scared, you can also request dental sedation to help you relax.

Once your mouth is numb, your dentist will take some impressions of the damaged tooth to send to the lab to make your new crown. Then, he will carefully remove the injured enamel, reshaping it so it fits your prosthetic once it arrives. Next, you’ll be given a temporary crown to wear until the new one is delivered to your dentist’s office from the dental lab, which typically takes about two weeks. Once it arrives, you’ll be scheduled to return to have your temporary restoration removed, and the permanent one attached. This last step should not hurt, and shouldn’t require any numbing, either!

Caring for Your Dental Crown

Once you get your temporary crown, you might experience some sensitivity to hot and cold foods and beverages, but this should go away on its own once you get the permanent restoration. You should also be careful to avoid eating anything too hard or sticky with your temporary prosthetic, as these can make it come loose or fall out. Once your permanent crown arrives, you can resume your regular diet, but you should still be careful eating anything too hard and never use it in place of a tool (no tearing packaging!).

Dental crowns should last about 10 years with proper care but will eventually need to be replaced. To ensure yours lasts for as long as possible, be sure to protect it with regular brushing and flossing. You can use the same tools you use for the rest of your teeth, but please be aware that products like whitening toothpastes or strips have no effect on dental crowns, so if it does become discolored, you’ll need to speak to your dentist about your options for restoring it.

Remember, while it may be a little nerve-wracking to hear you need a dental crown, the truth is that there’s nothing to be afraid of! In fact, this ‘royal’ treatment is an excellent way to restore the appearance and function of a damaged tooth, so it lasts for years to come!

About Dr. Labosky

Dr. Kevin Labosky earned his undergraduate degree at Penn State and his dental degree from the Temple University School of Dentistry.
