Cosmetic dentistry is a wonderful way to transform your smile and boost your confidence. There are a range of treatment options available depending on your needs, timeline, and budget. But if you feel hesitant to make the call to your cosmetic dentist in State College because you are worried that a procedure may be painful, rest assured – thanks to modern advances, you can relax throughout the entire treatment. Keep reading to learn why we are so confident cosmetic dentistry doesn’t hurt.

Non-Invasive Procedures

A number of cosmetic dentistry treatments do not require any sort of alteration to the tooth structure, which means they are non-invasive and do not cause discomfort at all.

Teeth whitening and Invisalign are two examples of non-invasive cosmetic dentistry procedures. Teeth whitening works by bleaching the outer layer of tooth enamel, removing stains to help you smile to up eight shades brighter. Invisalign is a clear braces option that lets you straighten your teeth without any metal. While you will feel slight soreness as a result of the teeth shifting into the proper position, you will not feel any discomfort from the treatment itself.

Learn About Sedation Options

For cosmetic procedures that do require alteration of the tooth structure, like porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, or even dental implants, there are a number of sedation options available to help ensure you feel completely comfortable throughout the treatment.

Common sedation dentistry options include:

  • Nitrous oxide: A gas you breathe in during the procedure, nitrous oxide (aka laughing gas) helps take the edge off by allowing you to feel relaxed and even happy to be in the dental chair. The effects wear off as soon as the treatment is complete.
  • Oral conscious sedation: For a deeper level of relaxation, your dentist may recommend oral conscious sedation. You will take a commonly prescribed medication about an hour before the procedure. By the time you are settling into the dental chair you will feel completely relaxed. You will be advised to have someone drive you home after the procedure, as it will take a few hours for the sedative effects to wear off completely.
