When you wake up in the morning, do you head to your local café or make your own cup of coffee? This drink can be what you need to get yourself through the morning, but how will this habit change now that you have clear aligners? It may cause some trouble if you don’t know what to do, but thankfully, you don’t have to quit drinking your beloved brew. Here’s how it can affect your treatment and how you can safely enjoy it.

Why Can’t I Have Coffee While Wearing My Aligners?

An important rule for aligners that you shouldn’t break is not eating or drinking anything other than water while you have them in. By enjoying another beverage, like coffee, it can cause a myriad of problems such as:

  • Cavities: You may be at a higher risk of this oral health issue because of how acidic and sugary a cup of joe is. When you have it while wearing your trays, it can get trapped between your teeth and them. The longer it lingers, the greater chance you have of developing decay.
  • Stains: Coffee can cause this to your aligners over time. This can make them easier to see, but you may also notice your teeth becoming a bit discolored as well.
  • Warping: Anything hot can warp the shape of your thin plastic trays. When their fit is changed, they may not be as effective as they are designed to be.

How Can I Enjoy Coffee During My Treatment with Clear Aligners?

As was mentioned above, the good news is you don’t have to give up coffee with this type of orthodontics, but you should change your routine a bit! For instance, you should take out your aligners before you drink it and try to finish it in 15 to 30 minutes. This will help you ensure you reach the full 20- to 22-hour wear time.

You should also consider reducing how many additives you use, such as less cream and sugar; that way, you can lower your risk of cavities as well. Lastly, be sure you rinse your mouth when you finish your cup and brush 30 minutes afterward.

By adding these into your routine and making them a habit, you can enjoy a smooth treatment and avoid any complications. That way, your smile-straightening journey doesn’t have any hiccups in it, and you can get to results that you feel comfortable with.
